The Montreal Incident
- Date & Location: July 6, 1977, at the Olympic Stadium in Montreal, Canada.
- The Atmosphere: The crowd was rowdy, noisy, and setting off loud firecrackers while the band played
- The Trigger: A noisy fan or a small group tried to claw their way up and get directly onto the front of the stage.
- The Action: An exasperated Roger Waters coaxed the individual closer and spat directly down into the fan's face.
- The Wall Alienation: Waters later recalled feeling deeply disturbed and disgusted by his own reaction, realizing how disconnected and angry he had become performing in massive venues
The Idea:
That same night,
Waters told producer
Bob Ezrin
that he wanted
to put up a
literal brick wall
across the stage at
future concerts to
block out the
chaotic crowds.
The Legacy:
This concept turned into
The Wall,
a multi-platinum
rock opera
and conceptual tour
exploring isolation,
abandonment,
and
societal barriers
