David Bowie : Hammersmith Odeon , London 07/04/73 (Death Of Ziggy)

MY DEATH WAITS THERE
BETWEEN YOUR THIGHS
YOUR COOL FINGERS
WILL CLOSE MY EYES

 David Bowie

 famously killed off his

 Ziggy Stardust

alter-ego on

July 4, 1973

during a concert at

London's Hammersmith Odeon.

 Just before closing with

 "Rock 'n' Roll Suicide,"

he addressed

the stunned crowd,

announcing:

"Of all the shows on this tour,

 this particular show will

remain with us the longest,

because not only is it

the last show of the tour,

 but it’s the last show

that we’ll ever do"

While the audience feared

 Bowie was retiring from

 music entirely,

 he was merely retiring

the Ziggy persona

 and dismissing

his backing band,

The Spiders from Mars.

This bold theatrical move

allowed him to shed his

 most famous creation

 and paved the way for

his continuous reinvention in

 the decades that followed
