SOARING,
SOARING,
'BOVE THE CLOUDS
THAT ARE NOT SO HIGH
NOT SO HIGH
Aviary
was a very
British-sounding
American band
that Brian Lane,
manager of Yes,
got signed to
Epic Records.
They released their
self-titled debut album
in 1979,
While Yes is one of Aviary’
main influences,
there are also strong similarities to
1970s Queen
and
Todd Rundgren’s Utopia.
The whimsy and cleverness
also bring to mind the first
Ambrosia album.
And yet their music
is more symphonic
than all that may suggest.
Start with the
self-titled album
this stuff is so good,
we don’t know how we missed it
the first time around.
As it says in the liner notes:
“a disc which proves that they
do not make them like this anymore,
and that music is
unspeakably worse for that.”
