WORKED HARD
ALL MY LIFETIME
NO HELP FROM
MY FRIENDS
55 years ago today,
The Capitol Theatre
held one of its
most renowned concerts.
On August 8, 1970,
rock goddess
Janis Joplin
played a
groundbreaking show
at The venue.
That night,
she effortlessly enthralled
the audience
with her powerful voice
that echoed throughout
the venue.
To celebrate the
anniversary of
Joplin’s concert
at The Cap,
relive the
iconic night
in Cap history.
Joplin’s set
consisted of great songs,
which was nothing
out of the ordinary.
However,
there was one surprise
that she threw
at the admiring crowd.
Early in the set,
she debuted her song
“Mercedes Benz,”
which later went on
to be a huge hit.
What’s special about
this song,
however,
is that it was written
at a local bar,
Vahsen's,
now known as
Bambu,
right down the street
from The Cap.
This humorous tune
was written by accident
during a spontaneous
poetry session
between Joplin
and her fellow friend
and songwriter,
Bob Neuwirth.
The song was conceived
locally as it rattled
around
The Capitol Theatre’s
own neighborhood
before it went on
to top national charts,
and its journey
started right here
at this show.
Janis Joplin
passed away on
October 4, 1970,
only months
after this
performance.
However,
A Little Rough Sounding
But Just A Legendary
incredible night,
like her songs,
will never be forgotten.
