are an
English
punk rock band
formed in London
in 1975.
Although their
initial career
lasted just
two and a half years,
they became
culturally influential
in popular music.
The band initiated
the punk movement
in the United Kingdom
and inspired
many later punk,
post-punk
and
alternative rock
musicians,
while their clothing
and hairstyles
were a
significant influence
on the early
punk image.
The Sex Pistols'
first line-up
consisted of
vocalist
(born John Lydon),
guitarist
Steve Jones,
drummer
Paul Cook,
and
bassist
Glen Matlock,
with Matlock
replaced by
(born John Richie)
in early 1977.
Under the management
of Malcolm McLaren,
The band gained
widespread attention
from British press
after swearing
live on-air
during a
December 1976
television interview.
Their May 1977 single
"God Save the Queen",
which described the
monarchy as a
"fascist regime",
was released to
coincide with
national celebrations
for the Queen's
Silver Jubilee.
The song was
promptly banned
from being played
by the BBC
and by nearly
every independent
radio station
in Britain,
making it the
most censored record
in British history.
Their sole studio album
(1977)
was a
UK number one
and is regarded
as seminal in
the development of
punk rock.
In January 1978,
at the final gig
of a difficult and
media-hyped tour
of the US,
Rotten announced
the band's
break-up
live on stage.
Over the next few months,
the three remaining members
recorded songs for
McLaren's film
of the Sex Pistols' story,
The Great Rock 'n' Roll Swindle
Vicious died of a
heroin overdose
in February 1979
following his arrest
for the
alleged murder
of his girlfriend,
Rotten,
Jones, Cook
and
Matlock
later reunited
for a successful tour
in 1996.
Further
one-off performances
and short tours followed
over the next decade.
In 2024,
Jones, Cook, Matlock,
and guest vocalist
Frank Carter,
reformed
the Sex Pistols
to play a series
of shows that year,
with further dates
scheduled for 2025.
The Sex Pistols
have been recognized
as a
highly influential band.
In 2006,
they were inducted
into the
Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
although,
true to their image,
they refused
to attend the ceremony,
with Rotten
referring to
the museum as
"a piss stain"

Never Mind the Bollocks,
Here's the Sex Pistols
(often shortened to Never Mind the Bollocks)
is the only
studio album
by English
Punk Rock band
The Sex Pistols
released on
October,28th 1977
through Virgin Records
in the UK
and on
November,11th 1977
through Warner Bros.
Records in the US.
As a result of
the Sex Pistols'
volatile internal relationships,
the band's lineup
saw changes
during the recording
of the album.
Original bass guitarist
Glen Matlock
left the band early
in the recording process,
and while he is
credited as a co-writer
on all but two
of the tracks,
he only played bass
and sang
backing vocals
on one track,
"Anarchy in the U.K."
Recording sessions
continued with a
new bass player,
Sid Vicious,
who is credited on
two of the songs
written by the band
after he joined.
While Vicious's bass playing
appeared on two tracks,
his lack of skill
on the instrument
meant that many
of the tracks
were recorded with
guitarist
Steve Jones
playing bass
instead.
Drummer
Paul Cook,
Jones and singer
Johnny Rotten
appear on every track.
The various recording sessions
were led alternately
by Chris Thomas
or
Bill Price,
and sometimes
both together,
but as the songs
on the final albums
often combined mixes
from different sessions,
or were poorly documented
who was present
in the recording booth
at the time,
each song is
jointly credited
to both producers.
By the time of its release,
the Sex Pistols
were already controversial,
having spoken profanity
on live TV,
been fired from
two record labels,
and been banned
from playing live
in some parts of Britain.
The album title
added to that controversy,
with some people
finding the word
"bollocks"
offensive.
Many record stores
refused to carry it
and some record charts
refused to list its title,
showing just a
blank space instead.
Due in part to its notoriety,
and in spite of
many sales bans
at major retailers,
the album debuted
at number one
on the
UK Album Charts.
It achieved
advance orders of
125,000 copies
after a week
of its release
and went gold
only a few weeks later,
on November,17th.
It remained a
best-seller
for nearly a year,
spending 48 weeks
in the top 75.
The album has
also been certified
platinum by the RIAA

The Great Rock 'n' Roll Swindle
is the soundtrack album
of the film of
the same name by
The Sex Pistols
Production
By the time the soundtrack
was being prepared,
Johnny Rotten
(Lydon)
had left the band
and refused to participate
in the project.
Manager
Malcolm McLaren
was left with a major problem
how to sell a
double LP soundtrack
with no songs
featuring
the Sex Pistols' dynamic,
original vocalist.
Desperate for a
"workaround",
McLaren discovered an
October 1976
rehearsal session
by the original lineup.
In an effort to
keep up their
"chops",
the band would rehearse
during downtime at
Wessex Studios
while attempting to
record the
'Anarchy In The UK
7" single
for EMI
with producer
Dave Goodman
in October 1976.
Goodman secretly caught
the rehearsal on tape.
The band ran through
some cover songs,
many of which were
staples at early
Sex Pistols shows,
along with a
few more obscure tracks.
Unfortunately,
the recording was raw
and being a
simple four-track recording,
it was not suitable
for commercial release.
McLaren then decided
to take
John Lydon's
vocal track
along with
Glen Matlock's
(also long gone from the band)
original bass track
and combine them
with newly
re-recorded guitar
and drum tracks
performed by
Steve Jones
and
Paul Cook.
McLaren suddenly had
"New Sex Pistols"
material suitable
for release
and performed
exclusively by
the original lineup.
Better still,
fans of the band
had never heard
these recordings.
This tactic also
gave the impression
that the original band
was still together.
McLaren used this
confusion and the
"new material"
to market and promote
not only the
movie soundtrack,
but the film itself
